In the dappled light
Creation speaks
A symphony of birdsong
Gentle breeze, rustles the leaves
Light dances on the water
And peeks through the trees
A balm for the soul

Waterhens are shy and elusive creatures. Their plain colours and their preference to hide in the underbrush makes them harder to spot. But if you are quiet and wait, your patience will be rewarded.

To quote C.S. Lewis from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe:
“Wrong will be right, when Aslan comes in sight,
At the sound of his roar, sorrows will be no more,
When he bares his teeth, winter meets its death,
And when he shakes his mane, we shall have spring again.”

When I watched my children chase pigeons at the bottom of a HDB block, fully entertained and engaged by this simple pleasure, it transported me back to my own childhood days.
Without phones and other electronic devices, I spent many hours on Sunday afternoons playing under my grandmother’s sewing table, using her bits of scrap cloth to create costumes for games of make believe.
This artwork is painted in acrylic paint and uses collage from fabric scraps left behind by my late grandmother. The colour choices are reminiscent of my old childhood photographs. The background is hazy with a suggestion of HDB flats to represent my childhood memories that are a bit fuzzy. But the joy and exuberance of the children is in full colour to show the parts of my memories that are still distinct. The safety of home, and the care-free enjoyment of simple things.

Waiting and watching
Quieting of heart and mind
To hear the silence that speaks
Reward for the patient
The magical moment occurs
Dappled light and sure-footed deer,
Moving across your path
Blink and you would have missed it
Too busy and you would have overlooked it
