This series explores what it is to follow Jesus
When we walk with someone, we automatically match our pace with theirs. So what does matching pace with Jesus look like? Early in our journey we might be like toddlers who are easily distracted and run off in different directions, we might even go through a rebellious phase and wander further off, but as we mature in our relationship I would like to think that these meanderings occur less and less and we become far more in sync with Him.
Acrylic on 30cm x 40cm stretched canvas
Sometimes while following Jesus we feel like we have been lead to a dead end. We feel like we are trapped, with the dead sea before us and an army behind our backs. This can throw us into a panic, as we desperately try to find our own solutions. But as we learn to wait on the Him, we will find the place of break through.

When Jesus travelled from Judea to Galilee, he took the road less travelled, choosing to travel through Samaria instead of going around it. Choosing to stop to have a conversation with a Samaritan woman by the well. The gold line represents the route Jesus took and the gold circle the impact of his visit spreading from the place where he met the woman. The thick black line represents the route most others take to avoid Samaria, and the thin black line hopefully represents our choice to walk with Jesus along the road less travelled.

Jesus crossed the sea of Galilee from Capernaum to the Gadarenes just to deliver a man possessed by demons. Then he crossed right back to Capernaum and carried on his way. He made a deliberate detour just for this one man. Would I go along with Jesus if it brought me on a big detour?

When Jesus died on the cross, his death bought us free access into the holy of holies. There is no barrier that prevents us from coming into God’s presence.
Matthew 27:51
At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.
Hebrews 4:14-16
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

This is a painting of a highway in the desert. I wanted to depict how we are lost in the wilderness, in the desert, with no idea how to get out on our own, and it is Jesus who saves us by building a highway through the desert. A direct escape out of the wilderness and into God's presence.
Isaiah 40:3-5
A voice of one calling:
“In the wilderness prepare
the way for the Lord;
make straight in the desert
a highway for our God.
Every valley shall be raised up,
every mountain and hill made low;
the rough ground shall become level,
the rugged places a plain.
And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together.

In the midst of the desert God woos us back to himself. He invites us to drink from Him, the oasis of unsearchable depths, to be refreshed by His life giving water.
Acrylic on 40cm x50cm stretched canvas
This is a picture of a tree with deep roots that reach past the dry top layers of hard baked earth to the life-giving water far below. A picture of a life rooted in Christ, a tree with roots well-established, able to weather the dry seasons.

I fell sick with covid in 2022 and have been grappling with the complication of long covid ever since. This is series was born from this journey, and comes from my exploration of what it means to be well, fruitful, rooted, grounded, and at peace in life, in relationships, and with God.
The originals of this series are available for purchase.
I have found that these lessons captured in images have spoken powerfully to people, and many have requested to purchase prints of these works. As such I have also released prints for them on Saatchi Art for international purchases.

Jesus knocks on the door of our lives, inviting us to open up to Him. He brings a feast that nourishes our lives from within. The tree represents our lives rooted in love, with fresh growth representing new life.
A picture of how the inner life can be transformed.
"Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me."
Revelations 3:20

This painting comes from my journey with long Covid. After deciding to stop teaching and be a full time artist I had such grand plans to ramp up "production" of artworks. But then covid hit and then long covid set in.
I railed at God and told him how it wasn't fair and complained about my lack of productivity. And I felt God challenge me to reconsider my definition of "productivity". He told me to define productivity as fruitfulness. He told me that fruitfulness comes from remaining in Him. To be Mary and sit at His feet instead of trying to be Martha.
"Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me."
John 15:4 NIV
Acrylic on 60cm round canvas
After I finished with the previous tree painting called "fruitfulness" I reflected that a healthy tree goes through different seasons. Just because there are no fruit on the tree it does not mean that it is not a good tree. We often look to the flowers of spring and the fruit of summer and dislike winter the most. But each season has its own glory and beauty. We need winter to rest, to prepare for new growth.

When we are rooted and rested in God, we can raise our hands in prayer for those we love. The fragrance of the our prayers like incense spreads over the land.

A picture of the ideal marriage, when two separate individuals become one entity. Nourished and rooted in God’s love, united as one, their lives reach outwards to bring blessing to others.
Acrylic painting on 60cm round canvas.
What would our communities be like if everyone acted in love towards one another? I imagine this tree widening and thickening as the dangling roots come down and expand outwards in love.
I asked my children what they saw in the painting. They told me "family".

When a tree is cut down, it does not always mean the death of the tree. Life remains in the roots and stump, and if the roots are well established and healthy the tree can produce shoots and regrow.
Job 14:7-9
“For there is hope for a tree,
When it is cut down, that it will sprout again,
And its shoots will not fail.
Though its roots grow old in the ground And its stump dies in the dry soil,
At the scent of water it will flourish
And put forth sprigs like a plant."

Let us behold and worship the King of Kings, the roaring Lion. He is roaring over your life and everything must bow before Him.
Inspired by the song by Paul Baloche "Behold Him"
Jesus, Son of God, Messiah
The Lamb, the roaring Lion
Oh, be still and behold Him

Hidden in the cleft of the rock we are safe from the storms that surge all around us.
Psalm 91:1-2
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
Will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress,
My God, in whom I trust!”
Watercolour on 11x15 inch paper
When we are feeling overwhelmed by our circumstances and confused by the many voices around us, we can retreat to a quiet place. Ignoring the scream of the gale, the fire that rages, the earthquake that rumbles beneath us. Wisdom and peace come by hearing His gentle whisper.
1 Kings 19:11-13
Watercolour on 11x15 inch paper
The ground hard dry clay
The land an overheated oven
The work thankless, seems futile
What seed could grow
In this inhospitable place
What seed could grow
In this hostile space
Wait for the rain
There is life in the seed
Wait for the rain
Streams will flow
The seed planted in faithfulness will grow in good soil
And soon a lush field will be abloom
Wait for the rain
It will come soon
It will wash your years of tears away
The painful sowing will be followed by rejoicing
Wait for the rain
Sometimes we feel like we are in a desert and everything is dry, barren ground. But we just need to wait, wait for the rain. And we will find ourselves amidst the flowers that bloom. This is a painting of hope and faith, that anticipates the rain to come.

This painting has deep significance to me personally. The image of a winding mountain path first came to my mind as I listened to various people share about their individual journeys in life and how they eventually found God. Some of them needed to wander away for a time before coming back to God with renewed faith, while others told of how God met them at specific points in their journeys, like way stations on their path, slowing bringing them closer and closer to finding Him. I wanted to show with the little red roofed huts that there are way stations along the long winding path and that eventually it leads up, further up and further into discovering who God is. I chose to paint this image with morning light and mist to represent a new dawn and hope as we look on. Though the year 2020, I have revisited this image, holding onto it as a promise, that God will bring me and my loved ones safely through life's journey, back home to Him.
“The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining brighter and brighter until midday.” Proverbs 4:18

The sun is setting and it feels like such a long wait before the dawn. But we wait and trust, knowing that God is faithful.
Psalm 143:8
Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love,
for I have put my trust in you.
Show me the way I should go,
for to you I entrust my life.
