I grew up with a pet cat and later also had a pet dog. Now I have a pair of rescue kittens to add joy to my home. Cats are one of my favourite animals to paint.
I've always loved cats and I wanted to celebrate the cats we see around our HDB estates. The mangy "strays" that sometimes go unnoticed as part of the background.
In this series of paintings, I want to explore these cats' haunts, their personalities and antics. I also want to highlight the special place they occupy in our communities in their unique interactions with the people around them.
I wanted to show how these cats are really community cats as opposed to stray cats. They are treasured, loved and fed by members of the community.
I love this particular angle where you can't quite tell how many cats are in the painting with its mess of tails and backs.

The hidden and often overlooked, brought to light in this artwork of a typical HDB back alley.

Cats know how to make themselves at home anywhere. This cat chose a piece of cardboard over a stack of coke cans in this briyani shop for a bed, waking from its nap to groom itself. It was my evening entertainment as a diner at the shop in question.

This corridor is a busy space with people shopping and walking by. Yet somehow this cat seems set apart from the busyness happening all around it, carving out a place for itself to rest.

At a carpark at Cambridge Market, a cat perches atop a car, quietly and curiously observing the happenings all around.
In many public housing neighbourhoods in Singapore, this is a common and familiar sight for the many Singaporeans who currently live in, or have grown up, in these areas.

This artwork describes this relationship between cat and feeder. It depicts a community cat that recognizes its feeder and waits expectantly for its feeder at the door, anticipating both food and affection. Its loyalty for its feeder is apparent in its gaze. I painted this as I wanted to give others a glimpse into the joy of this simple daily routine.

Cats have their territories and this cat claimed the front of a particular shop I visit often. It would preside over its domain and allow passers-by a pet if they approached politely.

Like Alice in Wonderland falling down the rabbit hole, this cat’s curiosity led it to explore the interior of a claw machine.

Cats choose the most unlikely places to sleep. A playground seems a poor choice for a morning nap when there are noisy children about. This cat was hardly perturbed by the noise, barely opening an eye to observe my children when they cautiously stepped over it to make their way to the slide above.

Perched on top of a car, this cat was quietly enjoying its vantage point and getting warm in the sun. When it noticed me it gave me its attention and greeted me with a friendly head butt, asking for pets.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of a marketing day at the Toa Payoh Lorong 4 market, this cat went mostly unnoticed, finding for itself a quieter “highway” route to get about.

This cat found the best warm place to sleep: on the bonnet of a black car out in the sun.

Timid and afraid, this cat found a mess of old rusty bikes a good hiding spot.

This cat liked to sleep in boxes. The residents thoughtfully provided it a box in this spot, replacing it whenever it got too dirty and beat up.

Our HDB void decks are special community spaces, providing shelter for all and easy access to the greenery outside. The many ledges feel like bay window seats, inviting us to pause and take in the view. This cat chose the best spot.

We were on route to visit great grandpa’s house when my son spotted this cat and decided to stop and pet it. Instead of rushing him off I let him have his moment. I think there is a lot we can learn from children. Learning to slow down and be present in the moment, to appreciate what is before us.

Sometimes it is hard to determine if a cat is a friendly stray or a straying pet.

A repurposed cardboard box, towels and pillow together make a cosey house for this community cat. It is clear that this cat is dearly loved.

While shopping at Whampoa market, I saw this dog, waiting for its owner's return on its owner's seat - the wheelchair. It was so comfortable and at home, treating this seat like its rightful place - secure in its position, knowing it belonged.

This shopping cart was parked in a corner against a pillar, away from the hustle and bustle of the wet market. At first glance all you notice is that the cart is full and heavy laden with the morning’s marketing. But then a head lifts and a pair of bright eyes look at you hopefully to see if you are the master come back at last.

Clearly beloved, this aged dog was pushed around in a pram, a soft mattress and a clip on fan added for additional comfort. Its eyes were only for its owner, its loyalty apparent with its faithful gaze.

I love how cats stretch out when they sleep in the sun. Loved how the light made beautiful highlights on this cat's fur and cast lovely inky shadows.

Turn and come into the light
That what is hidden may be revealed
Do not fear the bright
Beauty should not be concealed

in the hiding places on the mountainside,
show me your face,
let me hear your voice;
for your voice is sweet,
and your face is lovely.”

Played with colour in this painting to get more of a pop art feel. I wanted to really bring out the green colour of this cat's eyes.
