The inspiration came from one morning when I took a walk at the Botanic Gardens. I heard a lot of bird song and looked up at the tree above me, and was surprised to see so many of these coconut lorikeets perched in the tree. Then suddenly on some hidden signal they all took flight, their glorious colours flashing in the sunlight as they flew over head. I was awestruck by the sight.

The Tanimbar corella is a species of cockatoo endemic to Indonesia. The population in Singapore most likely started off as escapee pets. Like the many immigrants or foreigners who live among us, these birds now share our spaces and call Singapore their home. This particular bird lives in my estate. Beautiful and white, it can be seen perched on the tree tops making a racket. A welcome sight.

I always enjoy watching these birds. Saw one recently walking on the lily pads at Kingfisher Lake at Gardens by the Bay. They move so gracefully with a charming flick of the tail with each step they take. Yet they blend in so well with their surroundings it is easy to miss them. You are more likely to notice the lily and miss the bird that is standing just beside it.

I have always loved the vibrant colours of our local sunbirds, but I this one has got to be my favourite. The beautiful iridescent sheen on the feathers in all my favourite colours of teal and blue and purple. This bird is a frequent visitor to my garden and one I never grow tired of watching. Females are much plainer without the blue iridescent feathers on the head and neck. Painted referencing a photo taken by Steven Cheong.

The Oriental Pied Hornbill is one of the most charismatic local bird species. Yet, at one point in time, their numbers had declined to the point of local extinction. Thanks to sterling conservation efforts, there are now regular sightings of these birds, not just in our nature parks but also within our residential estates. They are bold and noisy, making their presence known with loud calls and screeches. It is a joy to know that we have found a way to co-exist together with them as neighbours.

I loved how these birds were all facing each other as if they were having a conference or meeting of some sort. This painting was gifted to a family of 5 as the number of birds and family members seemed so apt.
